Family Fitness Festival

This ties in pretty well with yesterday's post; so much so that it seems it was all on purpose! Not so - I'm not that organised!

I got an email today about Athletics Ireland's Family Fitness Fitness. This means that if you've been using your kids as an excuse NOT to exercise, you're out of excuses! Athletics Ireland have teamed up with Dublin City Council, the OPW and the Irish Sports' Council for the fifth year in a row to organise a whole host of events that include all the family.

The day's main event is the Family Mile Challenge (walk, run, jog) starting at 10am, but it also includes all the traditional fun like the egg and spoon race and a sack race as well as a toddle for the little ones and slightly longer races for children and youths. If you're interested in running yourself Elvery's is offering a gait analysis system; something very important if you're into, or thinking of getting into, serious running.

There will also be face painting, bands, a health and fitness expo, a farmers' market...the list goes on. I think I'll grab a child from somewhere and go myself! The entire event is free, but I would say getting there early would be a good idea. If you want to do the Family Mile Challenge you must enter online before June 29 - at no cost.

It gets better - the event is on at Farmleigh in the beautiful Phoenix Park. So much space for running around and having fun as well as space and facilities for picnics. It doesn't get any better :)

If you've been meaning to get out and about with the kids, this could be the perfect start...though you're not obliged to wait until then. If you go, let me know how it is and enjoy!! If I can get up and find a child - I might see you there!

  1. Really good story Ailish; love the picture of all the kids running.

  2. They're cute, aren't they? That's from the photo gallery on the event website. I think things like this are great ideas at a time when children aren't allowed to run around in the school yard (insurance reasons) while childhood obesity is on the increase. Obese children are ten times more likely to become obese adults apparently, so good to start good habits early I guess.
